The Platier Oye

The sea has shaped the landscape here. The shore was settled only in the Middle Ages. Born from the encounter of water, sand and wind, the dunes gradually closed the delta of the Aa. On one side the beach, on the other a polder.

The nature reserve The Platier d'Oye was founded in 1987. It is a stopover area for many birds. There is a great natural diversity from the foreshore on the seaside to the wet meadows and ponds on the land side and through the white dunes, gray dunes, mudflats ... in constantly evolution because of the wind and currents. If sand accumulates, the coast wins on the sea but at the site Ecardines on stormy days when the dune is attacked, the threatening sea could cross the cordon. Piles were  planted so as dune grass, to lay the sand.

The site is fragile, especially under the effect of trampling which made  vegetation regress and favors wind erosion. Behind the white dunes, the flowering of the gray dune foam pad is a beautiful sight in the spring. Shrubs such as buckthorn, black elderberry, wild privet created an impenetrable area welcoming many birds. It is then a herbaceous moor with ponds and mudflats of fresh and salt water, a kingdom for birds . Here we find the remains of defenses built in 1942 by the Germans.
